Simple & Safe Tips: Outsmart A Pickpocket and Protect Your Stuff

Fake Wallet and Phone

I always pack an old cell phone and a old wallet with me when I go out with my day pack. I have a temporary bank card that is no longer active and I put a few bills of local currency in it.

It is rare to be mugged while walking around but pick pockets are very common. If you were to be robbed, the hope is that the person takes your fake wallet and phone and runs off before the realize both items are worthless

Locks

As a solo backpacker carrying the right locks can be very key. I always carry two padlocks with me, One small one, and one larger or mid-sized one.

The small lock can be used on your daypack to secure the pocket with your passport and other important items as you transfer from the airport or bus station to your hostel.

The small lock can also fit most lockers in hostel dorms.

The mid-sized lock can be used for private rooms. Some hostels don’t have locks on private room, so you will need your own lock to secure the space.

I also carry two sets of key. Each set has a key for each lock. One I carry all the time, the other I hide in my main backpack or toiletry kit.

Another lock you can carry is a bike lock. This can be used to lock you backpack to your dorm bed. Having your clothing stolen is an easy fix, but your entire backpack can really hurt.

Extra Blanket

It is always a good idea to bring an extra blanket. Some long bus rides will have the A/C really going, and the bus can get very cold. The extra blanket also comes in handy when a hostel dorm bed does not come with one, or the one they do provide is dirty. You can check on Amazon for travel blankets that breakdown into small bags, ideal for stuffing into your backpack.
